Seventh-day Adventist Church Holds 40 Days of Prayer Before the GC Session; and other world news

The worldwide Adventist Church is holding a 40 Days of Prayer event ahead of the upcoming General Conference Session, which runs June 6 to 11 this year, in St. Louis, Missouri. The Church invites members from around the world to join in 40 Days of Prayer, from May 3rd to June 11th, which is the last day of the General Conference Session.

Adventist Church in the Dominican Republic dedicated the first congregation specifically for the hearing impaired in southeast Santo Domingo. The ceremony drew church leaders, member volunteers, and more than 35 hearing-impaired people, to the church’s Southeast Conference Events Room, to celebrate and witness the first amongst the group to get baptized.

Seventh-day Adventist temples in Brazil have worked to secure accessibility on all levels - physical, visual, auditory, and intellectual. In São Gonçalo, a municipality in the metropolitan region of the city of Rio de Janeiro, in the Brazilian state of the same name, the result of the efforts of the Alcántara congregation was seen in the recent baptism of eight people, including two young women who are deaf, and an autistic youth. The congregation itself is encouraged to take a Libras class, the Brazilian Sign Language, demonstrating that accessibility is also a matter of attitude.

More than 200 people attended the North American Division of Seventh-day Adventists Community Services Convention to celebrate 50 years of humanitarian work. Former executive director of Adventist Community Services, Sung Kwon was honored during the event for his more than 20 years of service.

The Adventist College of Bahia, in northeast Bahia, northeast Brazil, inaugurated the Institute of Missions, housing the first headquarters of the Colporteur Student Development Institute in Brazil, and a Missions Agency linked to the Adventist Volunteer Services Ministry. The opening ceremony brought together students, employees, local, regional, and national administrators, and representatives of the Seventh-day Adventist Church for Brazil and South America. The mission of Adventist Volunteer Services is to assist the Seventh-day Adventist Church in the proclamation of the gospel to all peoples by matching the talents, gifts, resources, and professional expertise of Adventist volunteers with defined ministry needs.
